Problematic cat memes
What are the worst cat memes? Are toxic cat memes a thing? Can cat memes be actively controversial, inappropriate or offensive? Or is it all a figment of our silly ape imaginations?
Cat memes occupy a disproportionately high pedestal in the pantheon of internet culture. So much so, that writing about them is borderline cliché. Except, like today, when we’re examining the potential harm of cat memes.
That’s right. Could something so inoffensive, something that’s literally become a byword for vanilla surfing, actually be a pernicious force in our society?
That’s why the meme scientists at custom GIF meme maker Memix decided to examine a handful of problematic cat memes, socially unacceptable feline content, in order to better assess the state of play. Let’s pounce right in.
Cats and laptops don’t get on on. You’ll seldom see a cat give your precious MacBook any attention, save irritatingly sashaying across the keys, somehow writing ‘DICKSrCOOL’ then accidentlaly posting on main.
But check out this little furry keen-bean. Not only is he engaging, he is fully immersed in what we can only assume is some manner of spreadsheet indicating slugging third-quarter growth.
Check out his little spectacles, his jaunty necktie. Is it fair to make a cat work? Well, we can assume he’s at least successful. That’s a nice computer, which cost good money.
Obviously he’s quite the fat cat.
Who knew that when snuck up on, our little feline bros react by kicking up and out in the manner of a startled horse? Bless this hapless prankster for finding out, so we don’t have to.
Maybe the cat is deaf or something? Aren’t they supposed to have excellent hearing?
It’s hard to feel in any way positive about this scenario. Both protagonists would have walked away shaken to their cores. I might need a lie-down myself.
My my, what have we here, a beautiful lady dressed as a saucy disco cat lapping at a cloudy drink. Friends, do we feel an uncertain stirring, at this feline/babe hybrid? Can cat memes be sexy? More importantly, should they be sexy?
The lady in question – Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, aka Doja Cat – is culturally appropriating hard here. Not only is her name stolen from the cats, but her demeanour and costume.
Celebrities riding roughshod over cultures that are nothing to do with them. As purr usual.
Is the suffering of another creature a fitting subject for our amusement? Did you find this meme funny? A wild crocodile, a savage swamp thing, mercilessly tearing into the innocent tender flesh of – we can only assume – an entirely blameless and likely beloved pet?
Behold the clinical rage in the croc’s eyes, the naked terror in the cat’s desperately agape maw. At least two humans – that knee in the background, and whoever is taking the photo – are spectators, perhaps grasping handfuls of soiled dollar bills as they drink and yell and wager on the outcome of this unsavoury interspecies battle to the death.
Horrific. Just horrific.
Everybody’s favourite pint-sized MMA mascot was in hot water earlier this year for being mean to a cat. Because surely nothing is more problematic, in the cat world anyway, than abuse.
‘The most lovely animal is a cat – when she misbehaved I scolded her a bit,’ claimed Hasbulla in an emotional Instagram rebuttal.
‘You are attacking me for nothing’
Be nice to cats guys! Love them! Celebrate them but making your own custom GIF memes on handy-dandy custom meme maker Memix, now with it’s own super Chrome extension.
It’s the cat’s whiskers.
While we’re here, does anybody know IS IT PRONOUNCED GIF OR JIF?
