I’m English – from London, indeed –  and when I first heard about Ted Lasso I thought it sounded bloody awful. I was properly angry. Americans don’t even like football! They don’t even call it by its proper name. How is this going to work?

But ah, it does work. Somehow it gets the football – soccer, whatever – stuff bang-on correct. Nails it. And it’s super funny. And incredibly heartwarming. 

I’d even go so far as to say inspiring. And it’s a massive hit! Who’d have guessed it? Here’s some funny, uplifting Ted Lasso memes, and some thoughts on why the show kicks so much ass. 

UPLIFTING TED LASSO MEMES

One theory as to why the show has taken off so spectacularly – it’s the most watched comedy on Apple TV in 50 countries – is that, quite simply, it’s positive. 

If you think back to all the ‘big’ shows of the past decade or so – we’re talking The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Succession – they’re all moody and mean. They all derive their fundamental dramatic tension from the dark side of human nature. 

Which is compelling. But not, it turns out, as compelling as a fish-out-of-water story loaded with affirmation and strong female characters. 

No wonder it broke Glee’s record for the most Emmy nominations for a brand new comedy. 

REBECCA WELTON MEMES

Speaking of strong female characters, Rebecca Welton – played to perfection by Hannah Waddingham – begins her character arc as a bitter, scorned divorcee. 

She deliberately hired Ted Lasso, a man who knows zilch about football, with the malevolent intent of tanking the team her philandering ex-husband cherished so dearly. 

But she learned to love the game, and her team, forming deep loving bonds with the rest of the main cast – and having a saucy affair with a hot young player. 

JASON SUDEKIS MEMES

The titular character and Richmond FC coach Ted Lasso was first dreamed up by SNL stalwart Jason Sudekis as a tongue-in-cheek promotion for NBC’s Premier League soccer coverage back in 2013. 

The character clearly had legs, and despite a profound resemblance to Ned Flanders from The Simpsons has found a place in the hearts of millions around the world. 

Sudekis told Entertainment Weekly why he loves Ted so much:

‘Ted does see the best in people and he really is the best version of myself. He’s like me after two beers on an empty stomach on a bright sunny day, just like, “With all of us together, what can’t we do?”’

HIGGINS MEMES

Played by Jeremy Swift – who you might remember from Downton Abbey – has been one of the big breakout meme stars on the show. He kindly gave up his office to the new team therapist, insisting that he would be fine and could work from anywhere. 

Through the subsequent episodes, he was seen working everywhere in the stadium from in the team’s workout room to the broom closet.

This probably resonated with viewers – the show came out in August 2020, around which time we were all working from weird places weren’t we?

TED LASSO QUOTES

The writing on the show is tight as a drum, and neatly captures both the excitement of sport, and the delicious intrigue of a good workplace soap opera. And it’s funny, obv. Here’s some absolutely crucial lines:

TED LASSO MENTORSHIP

The show was co-written with ‘Scrubs’ creator Bill Lawrence, and told an interviewer for Vanity Fair the basis for a lot of the show’s uplifting messages came from a shared appreciation for quality mentors they’ve both come across in their careers. 

‘Jason and I really connected over the idea of mentors. He made every writer that we met with answer who their mentor was.

‘Whether it was someone who got them into further education, or who convinced them they could be a writer.’

TED LASSO FOR PRESIDENT

The cast were invited to the White House to give an address from the press room, which was pretty cool – fictional journalist Trent Crimm from the show even got to pipe up with a question.
