WHAT IS THE MET GALA?
Don’t be afraid to ask! We literally googled it for the first time like 20 minutes ago.
The Met Gala, also known as the Costume Institute Benefit or the Met Ball, is a charity shindig held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City each spring. It always reliably makes for one of the most eye-catching celebrity-fashion events of the year.
In fact it’s known as the ‘Oscars of Fashion’, only unlike the actual Oscars nobody has to go to the tiresome fuss of making a really good movie. They just dress up real fancy and drink fizz.
MET GALA 2023 THEME
The Costume Institute, since you ask, is the bit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art that focusses on dresses, and outfits. Which is why the Met Gala is such a big deal for fashion types.
Previous themes – a brief set out for designers, to be followed as loosely as they fancy – have included ‘punk’, ‘camp’ and ‘heavenly bodies’.
This year the theme is ‘Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty’. Karl Lagerfeld is that really intense silver-haired sunglasses dude you will have seen here and there, go on here’s a link.
Lagerfeld passed away in 2019, aged 85. He was one of the most prolific and celebrated fashion designers ever, and he ran some of the biggest fashion houses in the world, including Fendi, Chanel and his own namesake label, all three of which he served as creative director at until his death.
He was survived by his cat, Choupette, who is still around, travelling by private jet and earning more money than you probably ever will.
Doja Cat, the rapper, literally dressed as the Choupette at the 2023 Met Gala, as did Jared Leto, who is playing Karl Lagerfeld in a forthcoming biopic.

So who walked that famous red carpet? That wasn’t even red this year?
The ball raises money – millions of dollars of it – through the sale of tickets, which are bought by designers and brands. Tickets cost around $50,000 each, up from $30,000 last year, with tables ranging from $200,000 to $300,000. Yeah, we know.
Rihanna wore $25 million worth of Cartier jewels! Pedro Pascal from The Last Of Us wore some bonkers red thing. Cardi B wore three different fits! Diddy looked like a Tudor baron!
So rich people, obv. Hey, remember when Elon Musk showed up with his mom the other year, obligingly wearing a tux so all those people who think he’s a cruel, out-of-touch plutocrat had photos for their stupid articles until the end of time?
The Kardashians rocked up, although alas Blake Lively, who is normally the most fun person in the room, failed to show.
Organisers make a point of never revealing the guest list, so it’s a mystery until it’s all over social media the next day. We do however know who the ‘co-chairs’ will be.
